Character Description

The character that is in the film opening that we have created has come from an unstable background within his home and school life. When we were looking at certain the description of this character as a group we thought about how the character may be presented in the opening of 'When The Bell Rings'.

Having discussed the character in detail we decided that the main convention that of this character that we wanted to focus on was the clothing that he will be wearing and the connotations of the colour/s of this clothing. Throughout the most part of the opening the character will be dressed in black pyjamas. This is a very important part of the characters description as the connotation of the colour black is dark and depressing which is often in the media to relate to death in either horror or thriller films. The colour black is also related in the modern era to specific younger groups, such as the Goth, which relates to the Gothic genre that is shown to be dark and depressing.

Although the character in the film opening is not a stereotypical Goth, his age as well as the clothing he is wearing may give the audience the impression that he is. The clothing of the character in the scene relates directly to his personality which we felt as a group makes a nice connection between what the character looks like and is shown to be on the outside to the audience with his inner feelings.

The inner feelings of the character are very important in setting the scene for not only the film opening that we are going to create but also the film as a whole if we were to carry on a create it. With the colour black relating to the depressing nature of the character but on a wider scale also death, we feel that the way the character is seen and interpreted by the audience could mean that he is also related to death either in the past or the future in some way. We felt that this would immediately catch the attention of the audience and make them want to see more of the film just from seeing the main character.

The blue bruising that is around the characters face and body is also a significant part of the character and the plot of the overall film. The bruising shows that the character has been physically and probably mentally beaten in his recent past. This shows the audience why he is so disturbed which can be seen by his facial expressions and the colour that he is wearing, black. We felt that it was also important that the bruising around the characters face was a blue colour. This is effective as the connotation of blue is cold and weary. This shows the audience that the character is a cold, deranged character. This also shows that he isn't bothered by what happens to him and what happens to other people around him. We felt that this was important when we were discussing the character as we wanted to portray a murderous character that showed no remorse for what he is going to do.

During the opening of the film the character is going to self-harm; we feel that this is a great way of showing the deranged nature of the character which therefore backs up the description of the character and justifies why we have portrayed this character like this. During the self-harming part of the scene blood is going to be pouring down the character arm. We feel that relating the character to blood is important as blood and gore is one of the main horror conventions. The colour red is therefore also used in relation to the character which is important as the connotation of this colour is mainly seen as love and death.

Overall the character that we have created for the opening of 'When The Bell Rings' is shown to be a dark and disturbed character by the connotations of the colour of his clothes. He is also shown as a cold, deranged and some what psychotic. this is mainly shown through the bruising around his face, which is the colour of blue to represent the cold/chilling inner personality of the character. We believed when discussing this as a group that the way this character was portrayed to the audience would be a good base for a film with the horror/thriller genre.
