Audience Theories
The target audience for the film that we have created has quite a wide range as we are predominantly aiming it at men from the age of 15-35. We feel, having done some research that this is the sort of audience that are interested in watching Thriller/Horror films. The social demographic that we have aimed the film opening at is C2-E as we feel that it will have a greater appeal to people from a lower class background; this, however does not mean that that people from a higher class won’t enjoy the film. As this film is aimed at quite a wide audience we feel that it is aimed at everyone in terms of ethnicity as this will be appropriate for anyone to watch and will not offend anybody in terms of race or background.
Media Grouping
Graham Burton’s Grouping Theory says that audiences can be grouped by their common interest in the media for example the media type they prefer (e.g. Magazines, Newspapers) or in this case they can be grouped through the genre of film that they most enjoy.
Burton’s Media Grouping says that an audience can be grouped by their common interests in the media. When aiming a film or film opening at a certain audience this way we decided to group the audience by the genre of film which they enjoy the most. This is a great way to group as anybody that enjoys thriller or horror films will immediately become part of the audience that we are targeting, the film opening that we have created at.
Social Grouping
John Hartley developed the media grouping theory saying that an audience could be refined into a more niche audience by grouping different audiences through their social background. This involved splitting this theory into five categories which are Self, Gender, Age Group, Class/Social Demographic and Ethnicity/Race. This means that a target audience can be chosen through by applying these social groups; this would then refine the audience that a media product such as a film opening was aimed at.
Self
As an individual watching the film opening that we have created they would have to be quite strong as parts of the scene that are shown are disturbing as part of the effects that we are using and the storyline that we have thought of. They would also have to use ‘Schneidenfraud’ which is when you take pleasure from someone else’s pain (this is used in the media a lot, an example in magazine articles about celebrities).
Gender
Our film opening is predominantly aimed at the male gender we have researched what gender watch more thriller and horror films. This research showed that Men watch this type of film more than women do. This means that the film would appeal to a wider audience by targeting men and we believe therefore would become more of a success than if it was aimed at women.
Age Group
We have decided to target a wide age range as we believe that the film would appeal to people from the age of 15 (which is what the Age Rating of the film is going to be) to 35. This creates a wide audience but we believe that the film opening will appeal to the majority of people that are within this age range.
Class/Social Demographic
The social demographic that we have aimed the film opening at is C2-E as we feel that it will have a greater appeal to people from a lower class background. This again is quite a wide range as we believe that it will appeal to people with good jobs such as tradesmen and will also appeal to the unemployed and everyone in between. This is because the film, although disturbing should be entertaining for the social demographic that we have targeted.
Ethnicity
As this film is aimed at quite a wide audience we feel that it is aimed at everyone in terms of ethnicity as this will be appropriate for anyone to watch and will not offend anybody in terms of race or background.
Uses and Gratifications Theory
In the 1970’s Blumier and Katz suggested that the media audiences make choices about what to consume in order to meet certain needs. Their Uses and Gratifications Theory shows some of the different reasons that audiences have for consuming certain media texts.
Entertainment
The film opening that we have created will entertain the target audience as it should use shock tactics and should make them feel scared and uneasy about what they are watching. This will engage the audience and make them want to see what is going to happen in the rest of the film. This entertainment is associated with a theatre term that also applies to film; this is called ‘The Theatre of Cruelty’.
Escapism
We believe that the audience are going to become very engaged with what they are watching as the character that is shown will make the audience feel many different emotions, this includes the audience feeling scared of and for the character, empathy for what he has gone through in the past and disgust for what it is they believe he is about to do. This would involve the audience in the film so much that they could escape from what is going on in their own lives and we believe that this would also put problems that many of the audience members might have in perspective.
Social Interaction
The way that the target audience would interact with the film opening is through the emotions that they feel for the character which we believed are often mixed as he is seen as an evil character but also vulnerable through the flashbacks of his past school life. The emotions that the audience would feel for the character are feeling scared of and for the character, empathy for what he has gone through in the past and disgust for what it is they believe he is about to do.
Information
We believe that the basic storyline of this film and the opening that is shown gives the target audience information and an idea of what is going on in the world around them. This is because that the film is closely related to true stories that have happened, most famously in The United States of America. We researched these incidents by using different media texts such as newspaper articles and watching a famous Michael Moore documentary about the incidents called ‘Bowling for Columbine’
Identification
We don’t believe that the audience can identify with what is happening and subsequently what is going to happen in the film as they will have never found themselves in that position before. As the age range that we have aimed the film at is 15 we do however believe that some of the younger members of the social demographic will be able to identify with what has happened to the character in his school life and how he is feeling after being subjected to the bulling. We feel that this will engage the younger members of the target audience as they can relate to how the character is feeling.
Richard Dyer’s Utopian Solutions Theory
Richard Dyer states that people will respond to a media text if it offers them compensation for the inadequacies in their own lives. Through the media audiences can vicariously live their lives and fulfil their wants and needs, leading them to strive to a utopian life.
Generic Horror Conventions
Here are a list of Generic Horror Conventions. they are very simple but effective parts that have to be included in a film to make it a horror film. This information will allow us to hopefully create a film opening that meet the requirements of the horror genre.
- Blood – blood is a horror convention as it shows death and allows the audience to distinguish something bad has happened.
- Death – this can be seen as a horror convention as it is normal combined with the killer killing.
- Killing – this is a horror convention as most horror films need a killer or a set of killers.
- Victims – this help get the audience hook into the film as they can relate to the victims as themselves, also it means that the audience can try and guess how the next victim will die.
- Weapons – this always suggest something bad will happen with the weapon show in the scene.
- Darkness – this builds suspense among the audience about what will happen within the darkness and what is there as well.
Script/Screenplay
SCENE 1
A small plain well kept room; a bed is placed against the far wall under the window seal. The curtains are drawn which has made the room dark, however a small lamp is shining a bright light over the room. A photograph collage with the phrase 'When The Bell Rings' written in blood on it.
Voiceover - Please stop ple ple ppp pp please (groans in pain and coughing)
A teenage boy is lying in his bed, moving from side to side. A flash of light appears to signify a flashback.
Flashback
The boy walks down through the empty playground before a group of bullies see him and push him up against the wall.
Bedroom
The boy suddenly opens his eye
Flashback
A small child is being bullied by a larger group of teenagers in the middle of a empty school playground. They are surrounding the boy and kicking him as he squirms in pain.
Bedroom
The morning light floods through a small gap in the curtains, reflecting on a knife that is placed on the bedside table. This light immediately hits the face of a dark haired teenage boy as he gets up only illuminating half of him in light and leaving the rest in shadow.
As he gets up he reaches for the knife by his bedroom mirror, the knife is taken from the table and squeezed in his hand, so that blood runs down his arm, as he looks back at himself in the mirror. He then gets dressed and goes to leave his room but not before sticking the knife in his pocket. He then leaves the room and goes down his stairs which is lit up and has quite a warming effect which is juxtaposition to his room, he then reaches for the door handle of his front door and exits the house.
End Scene 1
Character Description
Having discussed the character in detail we decided that the main convention that of this character that we wanted to focus on was the clothing that he will be wearing and the connotations of the colour/s of this clothing. Throughout the most part of the opening the character will be dressed in black pyjamas. This is a very important part of the characters description as the connotation of the colour black is dark and depressing which is often in the media to relate to death in either horror or thriller films. The colour black is also related in the modern era to specific younger groups, such as the Goth, which relates to the Gothic genre that is shown to be dark and depressing.
Although the character in the film opening is not a stereotypical Goth, his age as well as the clothing he is wearing may give the audience the impression that he is. The clothing of the character in the scene relates directly to his personality which we felt as a group makes a nice connection between what the character looks like and is shown to be on the outside to the audience with his inner feelings.
The inner feelings of the character are very important in setting the scene for not only the film opening that we are going to create but also the film as a whole if we were to carry on a create it. With the colour black relating to the depressing nature of the character but on a wider scale also death, we feel that the way the character is seen and interpreted by the audience could mean that he is also related to death either in the past or the future in some way. We felt that this would immediately catch the attention of the audience and make them want to see more of the film just from seeing the main character.
The blue bruising that is around the characters face and body is also a significant part of the character and the plot of the overall film. The bruising shows that the character has been physically and probably mentally beaten in his recent past. This shows the audience why he is so disturbed which can be seen by his facial expressions and the colour that he is wearing, black. We felt that it was also important that the bruising around the characters face was a blue colour. This is effective as the connotation of blue is cold and weary. This shows the audience that the character is a cold, deranged character. This also shows that he isn't bothered by what happens to him and what happens to other people around him. We felt that this was important when we were discussing the character as we wanted to portray a murderous character that showed no remorse for what he is going to do.
During the opening of the film the character is going to self-harm; we feel that this is a great way of showing the deranged nature of the character which therefore backs up the description of the character and justifies why we have portrayed this character like this. During the self-harming part of the scene blood is going to be pouring down the character arm. We feel that relating the character to blood is important as blood and gore is one of the main horror conventions. The colour red is therefore also used in relation to the character which is important as the connotation of this colour is mainly seen as love and death.
Overall the character that we have created for the opening of 'When The Bell Rings' is shown to be a dark and disturbed character by the connotations of the colour of his clothes. He is also shown as a cold, deranged and some what psychotic. this is mainly shown through the bruising around his face, which is the colour of blue to represent the cold/chilling inner personality of the character. We believed when discussing this as a group that the way this character was portrayed to the audience would be a good base for a film with the horror/thriller genre.
Location Recce
The location that we will film in has to look realistic and create verisimilitude. The setting for the beginning of the film is a teenager’s bedroom. This works well as it is a simple set that the group can access easily as we can film the opening scene of our film one of our bedrooms.
Location
A teenager’s bedroom- We will shoot the film beginning that we are going to create in my (Rhys’) bedroom as it is the right size and is easy to access as it is close to the school. This will allow us to shot and edit parts of the film quickly using the schools ‘Final Cut Pro’ editing software.
In the film there is going to be a flashback. This will be filmed in a school playground as it will show realism within the film. This is also accessible at all times as we can use our school playground when filming.
Time
The time in which we shoot our film opening is important, as we need the set to be as quiet as possible in order to build the tension within the film. The time in which the set that we are using will be the quietest is 10am-2pm as it is in the middle of the day, which means that most people will be at work. This will also be a great time to film as it is in school time.
We will shoot the flashback at 1:05 this is when the time in which we start lunch. This will mean that everyone from our school will be on the playground which will create verisimilitude.
Date
The date in which we film will be Monday 15th March as we have access to both locations in which we need to film. This will also give us time to plan, and arrange different props that we need to create verisimilitude within the scene.
Resources List
The resources lists consist of the times in which the equipment is checked in and out. The first thing to write in the table is the time you took out the equipment from the LRC. The need to right in some detail what equipment you took out, for example if it’s a HD camera, make of the camera or if it’s a tri-pod. This is important because you will and to make sure you use the same camera for the whole of your filming. After using camera make sure you check it back into the LRC, this is to prove that you have taken it back and to clear name if lost, stolen or broken. When you check out the camera it is you’re responsible to look after it not the whole group so we write our name on the table to know who is responsible for checking it in and out.
Out/Time | Equipment | In/Time | Name |

Contingency Plan
To make sure that the dates that we plan to film are successful we make sure that we book out a camera with full battery, will insist on taking a charger for the camera just in case we run out of power. When we book a camera out we make sure that there is enough memory on it so we can film, when will film we will bring a memory card as a back up in case we use all the free space on the video camera.
We plan to book in advance as we plan to do all our filming on Monday’s which is when we are all free, so we would either book one out Friday afternoon or come in early Monday morning.
Before we book out a tripod we will make sure that it will meet our needs, so it is able to fit in the location we are filming in, it the right height for some of the shots we need to film.
Because we only have two filming locations, we keep our props at ryhs’s house this is so we don’t lose any, or they get damaged in transporting them to his house. This is good because if we are in a rush to get to a location we can’t forget some props because they are already at the location.
